If you bet on the Denver Broncos to win Super Bowl XLVIII, then like a lot of people, you're having to pay up. Here's a story that might make you feel better - at least you're not "Mattress Mack" who lost $7 million.
No, he didn't make a bet at Vegas. Gallery Furniture owner Jim 'Mattress Mack' McIngvale promised customers that they could have their furniture free if they spent $6,000 or more, and if the Seahawks won. And win they did.
"My accountant told me it was a crazy idea, that I should never do it and he's pulling his hair out this morning," he said.
McIngvale, well-known for his energetic style, says it all started last week with a coin toss for the Broncos.
"The best outcome that could have happened is for Seattle to have won the big game. Our drivers were delivering furniture up until the fourth quarter," said McIngvale.
Sunday evening, the official "Mattress Mack" Twitter account announced the good news:
It sounds like Jim isn't sweating it too much - it's just a promotion for his business, and he seems to be outwardly happy about it:
"As far as financially, we didn't do well," he said. "But we did a great job building the brand and delighting customers and if we do that, the business will continue to grow."
Of course, those who won the bet are still gonna get hit up for taxes by Uncle Sam. If Jim had spent that money on an actual commercial during the Super Bowl, that would have bought him about a full minute of ad time.
