Democratic Representative Alan Grayson, Congressman from the Orlando area, has made a name for himself with his incendiary comments: he's said on the House floor that Republicans want Americans to die quickly, he's likened the Tea Party to the Ku Klux Klan in fundraising emails, and he once called an adviser to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke a “K Street Whore.”
All this pales in comparison to what we learned about him over the weekend. He is currently going through a divorce with his wife Lolita, to whom he's been married for 24 years. They have 5 children together, two under the age of 10. By her account, he stopped by her house over the weekend, unannounced, and demanded to speak with her in private. When she refused and asked him to leave, he pushed her into the front door so hard that it caused her to fall.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that she says she pushed him in the face and kneed him in the stomach in order to defend herself, before calling 911. She said that while on the phone with the operator, in the presence of their children, he told her she would “receive nothing” from the divorce and would be left “in the gutter.” The Congressman, valued at $16.69 million, is the 21st wealthiest member of Congress.
Grayson and his office deny the claims, instead placing the blame on Lolita.
Via Fox News:
“Since filing for divorce, Ms. Grayson’s behavior has become increasingly erratic, and she has demonstrated an alarming disconnect from reality,” Doney said in a statement. “Congressman Grayson is deeply concerned by her recent behavior and is profoundly pained by her accusations.”
Photos have been shared with the media which show large bruises on Ms. Grayson's left leg and shoulder. She says that he has battered her and their small children in the past, but never sought intervention.
A judge has granted Ms. Grayson an injunction, giving her temporary custody of their children, possession of their home, and barring contact from the Congressman.
This is deeply disturbing news to hear about a United States Congressman. His actions before were unsettling, but this, if true, is deplorable.
