Chicago celebrated Independence Day in violent fashion. More than 60 people were shot over the weekend, and at least 11 were killed by gunfire. Chicago is famous for its strict gun control laws.
From NBC Chicago:
Violence in Chicago continued over the Fourth of July weekend with at least 11 people shot in roughly four hours Sunday afternoon, bringing the total number of people shot since the holiday weekend began to more than 60.
At least seven people have been killed over the long weekend.
Most recently, a 21-year-old man was killed and a 19-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the 5200 block of West Lake Street around 5:40 p.m. Sunday. Police said the two were sitting in a car when someone approached their vehicle and opened fire before fleeing on foot.
The 21-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old man was shot in the upper right thigh and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
I thought Chicago's strict gun control laws were supposed to prevent these things from happening?
This is another troubling example of how most gun control laws have the effect of disarming law-abiding citizens, while ensuring the bad guys continue to have access to guns. Clearly criminals, by their very definition, do not obey laws - in this case, even laws against murdering and shooting people.
If laws against murder don't deter gang bangers from shooting people, why would we think that gun control laws would deter them from getting guns?
Update: After this post's publication, the count of people shot in Chicago over the weekend increased to 82.
