Scott McMillan was only three years old when he succumbed to the systematic abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother and her live-in boyfriend in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
District Attorney Tom Hogan's voice choked with emotion as he described the torture Scott sustained. WPVI-TV reports:
“Over a three day period ... he was systematically tortured and beaten to death. He was punched in the face and in the stomach. He was scourged with a homemade whip. He was lashed with a metal rod. He was tied to a chair and beaten. He was tied upside down by his feet and beaten. His head was smashed through a wall.”
Hogan also added that trained professionals who regularly deal with cases of abuse were brought to tears when they saw the little boy's body.
Scott's mother, Jillian Tait, 30, and her live-in boyfriend Gary Fellenbaum, 23, were arrested for his murder.
Also living in the trailer were Scott's 6-year-old brother, Fellenbaum's current wife, and the married couple's infant child.
According to Tait, the fatal beating began because the toddler wouldn't eat his breakfast.
Tait also disclosed a horrific pattern of abuse, claiming that Fellenbaum would regularly hang Scott and his 6-year-old brother by their feet and beat them with a closed fist, “while she and Fellenbaum laughed.”
After torturing the toddler, the disgusting pair went car shopping, ate pizza, took a nap, and had sexual intercourse as Scott died.
Tait's other son is now in the custody of relatives. Fellenbaum's wife has been arrested for child endangerment, and is held on $500,000 bond.
Hogan says, more than anything, he seeks justice for Scott.
“And I promise you this: though the heavens may fall, justice will be done to these defendants.”
Hogan is seeking the death penalty for both Tait and Fellenbaum.
