Almost 100 women have reported being groped by multiple men, having their clothes torn off them and being touched under their clothing. At least one woman has reported being raped. Police suspect the total number of victims is even higher.
As a result, Cologne, Germany, Mayor Henriette Reker offered advice for women so they may help avoid assaults in the future. Reker told women to keep "a certain distance of more than an arm's length" from men they don't know.
She also said:
"Women would also be smart not to go and embrace everyone that you meet and who seems to be nice. Such offers could be misunderstood, and that is something every woman and every girl should protect herself from."
