On the cover of this week's issue of People Magazine, Kate Gosselin and her children, the stars of “Kate Plus 8,” are photographed looking as happy as ever.
What you may also notice, is that Gosselin is surrounded by seven kids instead of eight.
In the issue, Kate opens up about her 12-year-old son Collin, one of the sextuplets, who is spending time away from home. Collin has special needs, and it's something the Gosselin family has been dealing with for some time now. The matriarch of the family explains why she decided to send her son away to get help:
“Collin has special needs. [There's] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things. This has been a struggle we've had for a very long time, and it's one I've dealt with on my own. I've felt very alone in this. By the same token, it's not something that has only impacted me or him – our entire family has been impacted.”
The program is designed to help Collin “learn the skills he needs to be the best him he can be.”
And because the program forces him to be away from home, Gosselin shares that the family misses him very much:
"We miss him so much, so it's been hard because there is a huge hole in our family without him here. But it comforts us to know he's where he needs to be right now, and I can feel good about that.
When your kids go to college, do you miss them? Yes, but you reassure yourself that they are getting so much out of it. And that's the same sort of investment I feel like I've made in Collin's future."
In 2010, Gosselin admitted that Collin and his sister Alexis, were the ones impacted the most over her divorce to her ex-husband, Jon. They were so affected that both were asked to leave the school they were enrolled in, as the school felt it couldn’t “meet their needs anymore."
Collin was reportedly acting out in anger during this time.
It is unknown how long he will be away.
