On Friday night, Hillary Clinton suggested that half of Donald Trump's supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables.”
The rally moment led to a bit of backlash from conservatives who support Trump, and now, the Democratic presidential nominee is apologizing for her remark.
In a statement from the campaign, Clinton said she was being “grossly generalistic” by referring to half of Trump supporters in such a way. But the part of the comment she apologized for isn't likely to settle any ruffled feathers:
“I regret saying 'half' — that was wrong.”
“As I said, many of Trump's supporters are hard-working Americans who just don't feel like the economy or our political system are working for them.”
However, despite the comment, she noted that she “won't stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign.”
Clinton leads Donald Trump by less than 3 points in the polls, according to the latest Real Clear Politics polling average.
