During a televised anti-Trump rant at the Golden Globes last night, actress Meryl Streep said this:
Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.
Streep's comment was met with self-congratulating applause by those in the audience. A few small problems:
1. No one is advocating kicking out people here legally (?) especially rich Hollywood actors and actresses. To suggest that Hollywood stars are somehow victims in the immigration debate is demeaning to those who are truly in immigration need.
2. I know football & MMA seem like “low” forms of entertainment to this crowd but hundreds of millions of regular Americans love these sports and find identity in them. To value your vanity arthouse movie (which no one will watch) over, say, the National Championship game tonight (which millions will watch) is arrogant & daft.
3. The idea that actors & actresses hold the keys to all art & entertainment in society is laughable. If everyone in that room stopped acting today, the free market would immediately replace them with hungrier, better stars waiting in the wings.
4. A populist message loses its weight somewhat when delivered to a rich, champagne-sipping audience inside a Versailles-esque theater, smugly applauding for themselves and their elitist profession in designer tuxes & gowns.
Otherwise, great speech!
