IJR's White House Correspondent Erin McPike will be accompanying Secretary of State Tillerson during his upcoming trip to Japan, China, and South Korea.
We don’t take this opportunity lightly and recognize the controversy surrounding press access for the trip.
The invitation is a testament to McPike's tenacious, detailed brand of reporting. McPike has demonstrated a relentless focus on foreign policy and national security issues over a decade of reporting for some of the largest, most respected outlets in Washington. She recently filed an authoritative story from the Pentagon covering a background briefing on the state of ISIS, and she has written at length on the Mattis foreign policy approach as well as Tillerson's developing brand of diplomacy.
McPike has been persistent in requesting an interview with Secretary Tillerson. Last week, the State Department officially offered McPike an opportunity to cover the secretary's upcoming trip to Asia. An official explained that the delegation would be flying on a smaller plane than normal and that press access would be limited. After editorial consultation, McPike accepted the seat.
We are proud of Erin and are confident that, based on her many years of reporting at National Journal, Real Clear Politics, CNN, and now IJR, she will expertly cover the trip and relay its importance to a broad national audience.
We take this responsibility seriously as a news organization on the board of the News Media Alliance, Digital Content Next, and the Trust Project.
