A hair stylist found out how powerful her skill could be when she took the time to pay attention and reach out to someone who really needed it.
Kate Langman was busy working in the salon when she noticed a woman scouring the shelves to find a hair product that could untangle her matted hair. Langman asked the customer if she needed any help.
According to Redbook, the woman responded by opening up, telling Langman she hasn't gotten out of bed for months — she was battling a bout of depression.
The woman had not combed or washed her hair during the months she spent in bed, only pulling her hair back into a bun. Her hair seemed to be tangled up beyond repair, but that didn't stop the stylist from trying to fix it for the stranger.
Langman explained the situation in a Facebook post:
“This is when I mentioned to just put all the product back on the shelf. We made an appointment for the following day and she didn't show up. She then called about 2 weeks later and booked another appointment. And once again, no [show]. At this point I figured she wasn't going to ever end up coming in. It actually, kind of, broke my heart. I wanted to help her so much.”
The woman did come back. She showed up out of nowhere, and Langman couldn't wait to help her.
“She comes walking in and asked if she can get her hair done today, and that she finally got herself out of bed again. I, of course, said yes. I didn't care how late I stayed, I wanted to make sure she got taken care of.”
“I wanted her to know how hard I was going to try to make her feel great again. I explained to her prices and she said 'I don't care about the price, I just want to look like myself again.' I spent 8 1/2 hours with this girl. 4 1/2 hours of combing, and 3 hours coloring and 1/2 hour for the cut. All of this time, I'm just telling myself to keep going.. that this is going to be all so worth it.”
The stylist tried her best to cut as little hair as possible because the woman wanted to look like herself again.
Langman could see the difference instantly in the way the customer looked and felt about herself:
“By the end of this service, I could see the sparkle in her eyes and I could see her cheeks get rosy pink from the excitement of not only being able to run her fingers through her hair again, but she felt herself again.”
For Langman, it was a magical moment:
“I changed someone's life today.. & I'll never ever forget it.”
Langman praised the woman's courage and strength for fighting her depression and coming to the salon in order to inch her way back to being who she really is.
She was also grateful that she got to meet the stranger:
“I want her to know how great, wonderful, kind, loving, and how strong of a person she is. And not only those things, but how beautiful she is.. she deserves nothing but happiness.”
Langman was happy she got to be a part of that first step in her journey towards healing.
