Three years ago, after being alerted to a health issue by a fan watching the show, it was revealed that the star of HGTV's “Flip or Flop,” Tarek El Moussa, was battling thyroid cancer.
However, it wasn't until recently that Tarek revealed to Today that shortly after his first diagnosis, he was told he had testicular cancer, as well.
He explained how the back-to-back diagnoses left him fearing for his life:
“Getting the thyroid cancer is hard enough, and then a few weeks later finding out I had testicular cancer, I literally thought I was going to die.”
Now, the 35-year-old father is using his Instagram account to encourage other people going through difficult situations to keep fighting.
The photo — which was taken during his battle with both cancers — depicts Tarek as a very frail and sick man:
In the caption, he asks his fans to take a look at his eyes:
"I thought I would share this with everyone, to truly understand how absolutely sick I was.
Look at this photo and look at my eyes, I was a skeleton. This took a major toll on my physical and mental health. I know many of my fans have had similar struggles and can relate."
He continued by acknowledging how difficult the last three years of his life have been:
"The last 3 years were the hardest of my life, I look back and still wonder how I survived. I never quit, although I wanted to thousands of times all day, every day.
This is from hurting my back after battling 2 cancers. I had a 60 pound weight swing from my illnesses. I'm proud to say I didn't quit and I'm in the best shape of my life!! For everyone struggling right now from any situation, remember, keep your head up and don't quit! There is light at the end of the tunnel, stay strong!"
Here's a look at what Tarek looks like now after being labeled cancer-free:
Tarek's health issues admittedly took a toll on his entire family. Before his diagnosis, his estranged wife Christina El Moussa had never known someone with cancer.
She told People last month that her husband's battle with not one, but two types of cancer, left both of them scared and also contributed to the stress that led to the breakdown of their seven year marriage.
“Like any couple we had our share of issues. But we went through a lot in a short amount of time ... I had never even known anyone with cancer, so it was a very scary time.”
The mom of two continued:
"The tension between me and Tarek was high. We weren’t able to properly communicate anymore. It got to the point where we weren’t even driving to set together.”
Christina and Tarek separated nearly a year ago, but they continue to film “Flip or Flop” and co-parent their two children, Taylor and Brayden.
Despite being open about his thyroid cancer, Tarek has been fairly tight-lipped about his battle with testicular cancer until recently.
He told Today that he decided to come forward with his second diagnosis to raise awareness, knowing that his first battle helped others get diagnosed, as well. He said: “I feel it's something I had to do.”
