President Donald Trump is set to announce Gen. John Kelly's replacement as Secretary of Homeland Security on Thursday afternoon. The event is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Kirstjen Nielsen, who served as the deputy secretary under Kelly, was nominated for the position Wednesday afternoon. Elaine Duke is currently the acting head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The position has been left without a permanent owner since Kelly was appointed as chief of staff on July 31.

If appointed, Nielsen will be the first DHS staffer to ever move into the position of secretary of the department. She had previously worked as a special assistant to George W. Bush and for the Transportation Security Administration.
