“Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski offered an impassioned defense of both House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and embattled Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) on Monday.
Pelosi received widespread backlash after defending Conyers, who faces several accusations of inappropriate behavior, during an appearance on “Meet the Press” Sunday where she called the Michigan representative an “icon.”
However, both Scarborough and Brzezinski applauded the House minority leader's comments.
“I think Nancy Pelosi got in trouble for calling him iconic?” Scarborough asked. “In these days, in this environment, you're supposed to wipe everything out that anybody has ever done based on some charges that are put forward.”
“I understand that. I will say this, though. There's something bigger here with John Conyers,” he added.
Scarborough went on to describe multiple incidents that suggest Conyers, 88, may be suffering from dementia. “The guy is showing up in pajamas, OK? He's clearly not capable of being a United States congressman.”
“But he is an icon,” Brzezinski said.
Brzezinski then focused on Pelosi's controversial comments, thanking the lawmaker for “speaking the truth” regarding the accused Conyers. She also argued that considering Conyers's age, his allegations don't belong in the same “conversation that we're having” regarding sexual misconduct.
“I think it minimizes it,” she said. “Thank you, Nancy Pelosi, for speaking the truth.”
