A Democratic lawmaker called out House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over her handling of the sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), claiming her response proves the party needs fresh leadership.
Speaking on BuzzFeed's “AM to DM” morning show, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) said the following after being asked about Pelosi initially standing by Conyers amid mounting allegations: “It's the sense that it's more important to protect people in their positions or give people positions because of seniority or power ... rather than giving good people leadership because they've earned it.”
“I mean, at the end of the day, this just wasn't leadership that we saw from our Democratic Party leaders, and that's why I'm calling for a new generation of leaders in our party,” Moulton said. While he also called Pelosi an “extraordinary woman,” he believes “it's time for a new generation of leaders.”
A spokesperson for Pelosi told BuzzFeed, “Being a strong leader means making tough calls like asking your colleagues to leave Congress. Hurling petty insults in order to get booked on TV isn't leadership at all.”
Pelosi received harsh pushback from members of her base after she appeared to back Conyers following the first woman coming forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. "We are strengthened by due process. Just because someone is accused, and was it one accusation, is it two? John Conyers is an icon in our country,” Pelosi said.
However, as more allegations came to light, Pelosi ultimately called for the Michigan representative to step down.
“The allegations against Conyers, we have learned more since Sunday, are serious, disappointing, and very credible,” Pelosi said.
