On Wednesday, President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and move the U.S. embassy to that city. The White House has scheduled Trump's speech for 1 p.m. ET in the Diplomatic Reception Room.

Senior administration officials confirmed Trump's controversial decision on Tuesday when Arab leaders cautioned that Trump's actions would threaten peace in the Middle East.

Trump's decision would make the U.S. the first nation to officially recognize Israel's capital as Jerusalem, a city which the international community views as “unsettled.”

The president won't lay out a specific timetable for moving the U.S. embassy, according to officials, but will grant a national security waiver allowing the embassy to remain in Tel Aviv for six months.

Although Trump faced criticism abroad, one of his top opponents in the senate backed his decision. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Tuesday that he urged Trump to declare Israel's capital as Jerusalem.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), who also backed Jerusalem's recognition, warned that Trump should deliver his announcement “in a way that advances Israel's security and peace in the region.”

Cardin's warning came on the same day that the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem restricted travel for U.S. personnel out of concern that demonstrations would arise on the day of Trump's announcement.
