Dems Slam Trump Ending Obamacare Subsidy as ‘Spiteful Act of Vast, Pointless Sabotage’

Top Democrats are firing back after news broke that President Donald Trump will end crucial Obamacare subsidies, the administration’s most aggressive move yet to dismantle former President Barack Obama’s signature health care law.

“Sadly, instead of working to lower health costs for Americans, it seems President Trump will singlehandedly hike Americans’ health premiums,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement Friday.

The White House announced late Thursday night it will end key cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments which helped low-income individuals afford copays, deductibles and other out-of-pocket health insurance expenses.

According to Pelosi and Schumer, the administration’s move to end those subsidies is a “spiteful act of vast, pointless sabotage leveled at working families and the middle class in every corner of America.”

“Make no mistake about it, Trump will try to blame the Affordable Care Act, but this will fall on his back and he will pay the price for it,” the statement continued.

Secretary of the Senate Democratic Conference Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) also weighed in on Twitter, urging “Congress must act to fund cost sharing payments.”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) blasted the move as “mean-spirited, rash, irrational” in a series of tweets:

While Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif) said Trump’s latest actions against Obamacare proves he is “the worst President in modern history.”
