“The first thing I’m going to do is tell you that if I’m elected president, I’m accepting no salary, OK? That’s not a big deal for me.”
Trump later reinforced his pledge during a Twitter Q&A:

“As far as the salary is concerned — I won’t take even one dollar. I am totally giving up my salary if I become president.”
Turning down the $400,000 salary would have made Trump the third president in history to do so; The others being John. F. Kennedy and Herbert Hoover.
While many praised the businessman turned politician, who has a net worth of $3.7 billion, for forgoing his salary, it was recently revealed that Trump has been receiving a paycheck for his time in office — so far earning $50,000, as reported by “Good Morning America.”
People have jumped at the opportunity to accuse Trump of lying:

While many accused the president of making a false promise, it turns out there are two sides to this story.
Yes, President Trump has been taking a salary. But according to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, Trump will donate every dollar to charity at the end of each year.
Spicer said Monday during his daily press briefing that the president’s “intention right now is to donate his salary at the end of the year.”
He went on to say that Trump wanted the White House press corps to “help determine where that goes.”
“The way we all can avoid scrutiny is to let the press corps determine where it should go. In all seriousness … he made a pledge to the American people, he wants to donate it to charity and he’d love your help to determine where it should go.”
So rather than simply turn down the money, it appears Trump is pledging to do something positive with it.
