As Nicole Curtis puts it, she wasn’t “made for TV.” The 40-year-old mother of two from Detroit, had been restoring old homes long before HGTV approached her about a show. And when “Rehab Addict” first aired in 2010, the down-to-earth, hardworking mom watched as her show catapulted to number one.
Unfortunately for fans of the show, production of “Rehab Addict” has been on a year-long hiatus since season seven. According to SheKnows, Curtis announced a few months ago that because of circumstances in her personal life, she wasn’t sure she would be able to return to the show for an eighth season.
The circumstances, as Country Living reports, are likely the ongoing custody battle between Curtis, and her 16-month-old son’s father, Shane Maguire (below left).

In her best-selling memoir, “Better Than New: Lessons I’ve Learned from Saving Old Homes (And How They Saved Me),” Curtis revealed that she kept the pregnancy of her second child, Harper, under wraps while filming in 2015.
Already a mother to 18-year-old son Ethan, who was born when she was 21, Curtis told People that with her newfound fame and “dwindling” privacy, she wanted to keep her pregnancy a secret from viewers.
“Having my newborn child’s face plastered all over social media… that wasn’t for me. It wasn’t anything strategic. It was just one of those moments where I was like, this isn’t anyone else’s time and space; this is mine.”
In her memoir, she writes how episodes were filmed from the shoulders up, and in one particular scene, a large mirror was carried throughout a house to hide her belly.
Curtis and Maguire however, had broken up shortly before finding out about the pregnancy. They have since been embroiled in the contentious custody battle.
In 2015, after Curtis reportedly would not confirm or deny Maguire was the father, he filed for joint custody. A DNA test proved that he was, and despite Curtis’s protestations before a judge to maintain full custody of her son until he was two years old, her plea was denied.
To answer all your questions -yes! I was asked to be a surrogate -#lucy decided after all these years she wanted her own…
Curtis then found herself threatened with jail time for reportedly denying Maguire’s right to time with his son, after taking Harper on a trip during one of Maguire’s scheduled visits.
The battle, no doubt, has taken an emotional toll on Curtis, who recently posted this emotional photo to Facebook. She couldn’t help but miss her tiniest tot at home while celebrating her first son’s birthday abroad over the holidays:
LONG ONE-DON'T BE SHOCKED-ME BEING A SAPPY MOMMY-SKIP IF YOU THINK THIS IS ABOUT RAINBOWS & HOUSE FLIPPING:) In the past…
She writes in part:
“It’s bittersweet as this Christmas I had E; however, my other mini-me was not with us…
…The terror I feel knowing that this is our life right now, constant separation is real. My wonderful (sarcastic) ex significant other commented that I looked haggard the other day–my response was what mother wouldn’t after all this-it’s unnatural to be separated from growing children-(not just my opinion, but science -my body goes into withdrawals)…”
However, the HGTV star has recently let her fans know that she wouldn’t let a difficult year keep her down, announcing she “said yes” to an eighth season of “Rehab Addict.”
Throughout her rise to HGTV stardom, Curtis has maintained that being a mom is her first and foremost priority. From a struggling single mom in her twenties to an HGTV star, motherhood has always been an important part of Curtis’s story.

Some of my work is so-so, in my opinion. However, when it comes to children ? Best creations ever. Look at my "little" Ethan. When he was this age, he loved to do impressions -we spent a few months raising a Jamaican cab driver after one Spider-Man clip 🙂 #boys#mommy #betterthannew
According to People, her first son even appeared on early episodes of “Rehab Addict,” which began when he was 12. “Honestly, I didn’t do it for a storyline. I did it because I was a mom and I had to go back to work after picking him up after school,” she explained in her memoir.
Perhaps viewers will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of son Harper when filming resumes.
