A tense moment erupted Monday when pro-immigration protesters stormed a press conference hosted by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), shutting the event down by chanting that Democrats created the “deportation machine” that President Donald Trump is now using.
Pelosi was hosting an event in San Francisco to bring awareness to the plight of the 800,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program participants now in limbo after Trump’s decision to end the Obama-era policy when dozens of protesters entered the room chanting for the Democratic leader to be held accountable.
“Democrats created an out-of-control deportation machine and handed it over to Trump,” protesters shouted as they surrounded Pelosi while holding banners that read “fight 4 all immigrants” and “Democrats are deporters.”
At first, Pelosi attempted to talk with the individuals who called themselves “immigrant youth, undocumented and unafraid.” However, the California representative quickly grew frustrated after the protesters continued to shout at her.
“Just stop it now, just stop it now, just stop it,” Pelosi shouted before leaving the event.
Pelosi has been working toward a deal with Trump that would ensure the thousands of DACA recipients would remain in the country. Many of Trump’s most passionate supporters revolted after a report claimed the administration had struck a deal with Democrats that would make DACA the law of the land.
Trump has denied a deal was made but tweeted his support for it eventually happening, writing, “Does anybody really want to throw out good, educated and accomplished young people who have jobs, some serving in the military?”
