Just six weeks into the Trump administration, Democrats are seeing one of their worst fears realized. But it’s not the repeal of Obamacare, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, or the demise of Planned Parenthood.
Throughout the presidential election, there was a fair amount of hand-wringing over what might happen to the fight against climate change if Donald Trump were to be elected:
This really is a climate change election – Grist https://t.co/c3g7v676rp

Even Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton called it “one of the most important issues of the election”:
We can step up and confront climate change, save our planet, and invest in clean energy.
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) September 27, 2016
And when the “unthinkable” happened, there was even more:

I literally pray that we dont look back on this election regretting that we elected a climate change denier. Most serious issue of our time.

But what really brought the issue to a head was a conversation on CNBC with newly minted EPA Chief Scott Pruitt, who let a major spoiler slip during the brief interview:

Twitter was immediately rife with concern:
IN 2017, IT HAS COME TO THIS: Scott Pruitt, Trump's top climate official says humans are not causing global warming https://t.co/eFjjNtZW12

National embarrassment. Every day this administration diminishes our country.

EPA Chief rejects notion of gravity, kills self while attempting to fly off building. #WaronScience

@joncoopertweets This is a criminal. He should be jailed for Crimes against Humanity.

Pruitt wasn’t totally without support:
He’s right. The planet Mars has been undergoing climate change recently, who has been causing that? https://t.co/mTO9kDaSb5

But one response resorted to gallows humor, summing up what a lot of climate change believers seemed to be saying: “Human civilzation had a good run…”
