It’s been a rough few years for the Bush family, which has been forced to stomach the rise of a GOP nominee who openly detests them.
Over the course of the campaign, Donald Trump jabbed at “low energy” Jeb, and The Donald even accused George W. of lying about weapons of mass destruction. In many ways, Trump’s 2016 campaign was a repudiation of the Bush presidencies, so George W. and George HW joined Jeb in declining to offer their support.
But now The Donald needs some help.
The GOP nominee has nosedived in the polls, according to the Real Clear Politics average:
Campaign staffers are leaking loads of negative stories to the press, producing stories that start like this:
Donald Trump’s campaign chairman hit back at reports Wednesday that he has lost control of the Republican nominee.
Not so, Paul Manafort told Fox News, blasting such reports as part of a media-driven narrative in favor of Hillary Clinton.
And while Trump is managing to get the fundraising machine running, he’s still running behind Hillary:
But while Republicans debate whether Trump is worth unifying around, one Bush family member is openly supporting the cause.
At a gathering of Texas conservative activists, Jeb’s son, George P. Bush, told Republicans to stand with Trump. The younger Bush is the Land Commissioner of Texas, which is generally a stepping stone for higher office in the Lone Star State. The Texas Tribune first reported the news this weekend.
Video from the event shows George P. discussing the campaign, and noting that Texans supported a variety of candidates, before saying it was time to unite behind the nominee:
“From Team Bush, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton.”
Watch his comments below:
Trump has not seemed to actively seek the endorsement of a Bush, so it will be interesting to see if he responds to the news from George P. Bush.
But for now, at least, one member of the Bush family rides with the Trump Train.
