It’s the End of an Era for The Huffington Post

Ariana Huffington’s had quite a reign as the editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post.

Under her leadership, the left-wing website has evolved into one of the most influential blogs on the Internet.

Huffington has announced that her time steering her eponymous flagship has come to an end. The Wall Street Journal reported:

Arianna Huffington, who co-founded the Huffington Post 11 years ago and built it into one of the largest digital media outlets in the U.S., says she will be leaving the company in the coming weeks to focus on a soon-to-launch startup dedicated to issues of health and wellness.

Ms. Huffington, who is 66 years old, had signed a new deal in June of last year to remain at the Huffington Post as president and editor-in-chief through 2019. But she said the contract allowed her to launch the new company, Thrive Global, while continuing in her role at the site.

HuffPo, as it has been nicknamed, was founded as an answer to the conservative Drudge Report 11 years ago.

In an irony of fate, a steady hand at Drudge for years, the late Andrew Breitbart, had a brief hand in founding HuffPo before going on to launch its nemesis Breitbart.com.

The Huffington Post developed into a powerhouse that churned out SEO-focused content at a nearly unparalleled clip in the media industry.

Its content farm, search engine-driven approach targeted at every niche interest was described in the Columbia Journalism Review as “content so voluminous that a visit to the website feels like a trip to a mall where the exits are impossible to locate.”

In 2011, AOL bought the company for $315 million. The website’s largely unpaid blog-mill approach to content production, however, generated dissatisfaction among contributors, as it was hit with a $105 million lawsuit from 9,000 bloggers after the sale.

“The Huffington bloggers have essentially been turned into modern-day slaves on Arianna Huffington’s plantation,” said labor leader Jonathan Tasini. The Voice called Tasini’s claims “bombastic,” and the $105 million sum–a third of the AOL purchase price–without merit.

Three years later, The Huffington Post would quietly settle with the “unpaid volunteers” for $15 million.

Currently, the Huffington Post is known for its unabashed left-wing activism. Early in the 2016 election campaign, HuffPo made waves by announcing that it would be putting all coverage of the Trump campaign in the “entertainment” section.

After it became clear the real estate magnate was not going away, it reversed itself in December 2015 and put Trump coverage back in the politics section. Its headline: “We are No Longer Entertained.”

HuffPo does continue to put a characteristic note on every article regarding Trump:

Ariana Huffington, who is now 66-years-old, continues to rail against Donald Trump to this day. In a matter of weeks, however, it will not be as the editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post.
