Katie Couric Tried to Bait Betty White Into Bashing Trump, But Betty Showed Her What Class Really Looks Like

On Tuesday, Betty White commemorated her 95th birthday during an interview with  Yahoo! News’s Katie Couric. The discussion covered a wide array of topics ranging from beauty and career tips to politics.

After introducing the segment, Couric asked White:

“What do you think about the state of our country and how divided it seems to be?”

While the actress agreed the country is “very divided,” and that America isn’t in “the best place we’ve ever been,” she offered a solution:

“I think that’s the time to buckle down and really work positively as much as you can. Instead of just saying, ‘This is terrible. He’s terrible.’ Just think, ‘Alright, there’s nothing I can do about that right now but I can do the best in my little circle. So if I do that, maybe you’ll do your best and we’ll get through this.”

With negativity being an almost constant fixture of social media, Couric wondered if it was even possible for some people to think positively.

Fortunately, with age comes wisdom. Betty White put her finger on the cause of the “toxic” environment:

“So many people think negatively it’s like ‘oh, you know what I hate?’ Instead of ‘alright, I”ll get through this.’ Then all of a sudden you start lifting up a little bit, but, if you start with ‘you know what I hate,’ you’re gonna go right down the tubes.”

The beloved actress credited her “cock-eyed optimism” for her lifelong happiness. The interview concluded with White sending a powerful message to anyone stuck in the negative:

“You’ve gotta get through it. And you can’t change it, so let’s just one foot in front of another and get through it.”

Couric may have been pushing for an answer that focused more on President Trump and less on individual Americans, but White wouldn’t give in.

The woman who’s lived through the administrations of 17 different presidents, held steady in her position that the people, not solely the president, are accountable for making the next four years positive ones.
