After Melania Trump’s Stint Away From Public Eye, Her First Appearance Honors Military Families

First lady Melania Trump is set to host a reception for Gold Star families following a weekslong stint out of the public eye.

According to The Hill, Melania, along with her husband, President Donald Trump, will host a reception for Gold Star families on Monday.

The first lady and president hosted a similar event this same time last year in honor of the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve America’s freedom.

In a statement after last year’s event, Melania called Gold Star families a “unique and distinct category” of people who should be “cherished.”

“These families have endured the ultimate in pain and sacrifice on behalf of our country, and I am honored to have spent the evening with them,” she added.

The first lady explained that both she and her husband will “always pay tribute” to the United States’ military, veterans, and “the families who love them.”

On May 14, the first lady had an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition and spent a few days recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Since her surgery, Melania has stayed out of the public eye, which fueled a variety of theories as to the real reason why she hasn’t been seen.

However, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said the first lady is doing well and that a variety of internal meetings about her initiative have taken place during her recovery.

“Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out,” Grisham added.

Trump also told reporters before the Naval Academy commencement on May 25 that the first lady is “doing great,” and her longtime friend, Paolo Zampolli, said she seems to be “recovering well.”

The Hill reported that Melania’s first appearance since undergoing kidney surgery will be closed to the press. Although the first lady is returning to public life, Grisham confirmed she will not be attending the G7 Summit or Singapore meeting.
