Mike Pence Defends Government Shutdown: Not a Mistake to ‘Stand Up for What You Believe In’

Vice President Mike Pence is defending the government shutdown, claiming that it was necessary to stand strong for important values.

“I never think it’s a mistake to stand up for what you believe in, and I think what the American people admire most about this president is he says what he means, and he means what he says in a very real sense,” Pence said in an interview with CBS.

He also pointed out that Trump is willing to fight for border security but wants to work with Democrats to find a compromise.

“We were told that they [Democrats] were willing to work with us,” Pence said. “They were willing to fund a barrier at our southern border and to address the other priorities that the president laid out in that commonsense approach. We’ve taken them at their word.”

When asked if there would be another shutdown, Pence said that nothing was set in stone but that he hoped it would not come to that. However, he said the ultimate guarantee that another shutdown wouldn’t happen is if Congress worked together to find a solution.

“Well, I think our hope is that there’s not, but I can’t make that guarantee,” Pence said. “The simple truth is that Congress needs to do their job.”
