‘Orange Is the New Black’ Star Suggests Taking a Baseball Bat to Anyone Who’s Not a Democrat

Note: This post contains coarse language that some viewers may find offensive.

In cities across the U.S., protests and anger have erupted in response to Donald Trump’s election.

While leaders on both sides of the aisle have called for unity and understanding, it’s become abundantly clear that some Americans have no interest in that — including, apparently, at least one outspoken Hollywood figure.

Earlier this week, actress Lea DeLaria — who’s made a splash in her role on Netflix’s hit show “Orange Is the New Black” — posted an Instagram photo in which she appeared to call for violence against anyone who’s not a Democrat.

According to Fox News Entertainment, DeLaria “shared a Leonard Bernstein quote on Instagram about responding to violence through music,” which read:

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”

It’s the comment that she decided to add beneath the quote, however, that’s caused so much controversy:

“Or pick up a baseball bat and take out every f**king republican and independent I see.

#f**ktrump #f**ktheGOP #f**kstraightwhiteamerica #f**kyourprivilege.”

While DeLaria’s post has since been deleted, some Twitter users — perhaps anticipating the likelihood — took a screenshot before she did:

While the actress did reportedly receive some support over her post — with one, for instance, arguing that “our anger is the only thing we have” — many were quick to call her out over her violent message:

Including some who called on Hollywood to denounce the actress over her views:

And at least one who apparently couldn’t care less about the actress’s opinion either way:

Interestingly enough, DeLaria hasn’t been the only cast member of “Orange Is the New Black”  (a show that centers on the inmates of a women’s prison) to blur the lines between their on-screen personalities and real life.

In late 2015, costar Dascha Polanco was arrested for allegedly beating up “a 17-year-old girl in her New York City apartment,” though she ultimately took a plea deal.

As for DeLaria herself, she’s yet to publicly respond to the fallout over her social media post.

That fact that she’s since deleted that post, however, hopefully suggests that she’s had second thoughts about promoting violence against Americans who simply have a different political viewpoint than her own.
