Texas GOP’s Latest Attack on Beto O’Rourke — He Was In a Band

The Texas GOP made their latest attack on Democrat challenger to Senator Ted Cruz’s seat, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, on Wednesday with a series of memes poking fun at the congressman.

The first meme, which appears to be a photo of a younger O’Rourke holding a skate board, reads, “Sorry I’m going to have to skate on the debate on Friday. I just got this killer board I’m sure the voters won’t mind.”

All of the memes attack O’Rourke for not debating Cruz. According to the Texas Tribune, Cruz challenged O’Rourke to five debates. O’Rourke accepted the debate challenge, but wanted to make adjustments to Cruz’s schedule, including adding a debate in his home town of El Paso and holding two of the debates in Spanish.

The men are still in negotiations about the debate, but Cruz’s original proposal scheduled the first one for Friday, which will not happen.

The second meme posted by the Texas GOP twitter is a picture of a young O’Rourke with his punk band, Foss. “Sorry we can’t debate, we have a gig,” the meme reads.

Some argued the tweets just made O’Rourke look cooler and more relatable.

Others dug up old videos of O’Rourke’s band:

O’Rourke didn’t hide his musicality while on the campaign trail. In July, he performed with county music legend, Willie Nelson.

The Texas GOP’s last attack brought up a more controversial aspect of O’Rourke’s past. According to his op-ed in the Houston Chronicle, O’Rourke was arrested twice in the 1990s, once for attempted forcible entry and another time for drunk driving.

O’Rourke directly addressed his previous run-ins with the law in the op-ed. He called his DUI a “serious mistake for which there is no excuse.”

The Texas GOP tweets gained a lot of attention Wednesday, to which they replied, “Based on the reaction to our tweets we can confirm that Beto is in fact going to receive 100% of the vote from Buzzfeed contributors, out of state liberals, and people who use the word ‘rad.’ We feel very owned.”

O’Rourke has not yet commented on the tweets. According to the latest poll by Emerson College, the candidates are neck and neck for the upcoming November election. According to CNBC, if O’Rourke wins, he’ll be the first Democratic Texas senator in 25 years.
