A car that rammed into a police van in Paris on Monday afternoon was filled with explosives and weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a gas tank, according to French investigators.
The suspect's car exploded in the crash. He was severely burned and died shortly after. The police van caught on fire as well, but it was quickly contained. No one else was injured in the attack.
French police have flagged the suspect in the past for extremism, and the French anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the incident.
French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told reporters, “This shows once again that the threat level in France is extremely high.”
Collomb plans to present a bill to the French Cabinet later this week that will extend the state of emergency it is currently in and provide new security measures that are “needed.”
