During his Tuesday speech in Phoenix, Arizona, President Trump threatened to shut down the government in order to approve and fund the building of the border wall along the United States's southern border.

Trump stated, “Build that wall. Now the obstructionist Democrats would like us not to do it, but believe me, we have to close down our government. We're building that wall.”

The border wall was a hot topic during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. It has been reported to cost $70 billion and this fall, Congress will be negotiating a new government funding bill, which if not passed will result in a government shut down on October 1.

The Department of Homeland Security accepted the designs for the wall earlier this year, which included features stopping individuals from going under or over the 18-foot wall.
