On Sept. 14, Ben Shapiro — conservative commentator and editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire — will be speaking in Zellerbach Hall at University of California, Berkeley. While there has been resistance to Shapiro coming to campus, the school is preparing to deal with the students' emotional trauma.

The Daily Wire reports in a campuswide announcement, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Alivisatos said the college will be offering support for any student or faculty member who feels triggered by Shapiro's speech:

Support and counseling services for students, staff and faculty

We are deeply concerned about the impact some speakers may have on individuals’ sense of safety and belonging. No one should be made to feel threatened or harassed simply because of who they are or for what they believe. For that reason, the following support services are being offered and encouraged:

Student support services

Employee (faculty and staff) support services

The resources that are available to students following the sold-out event include:

  • Mental health counseling
  • Non-emergency medical care
  • The ability to report “hate crimes or hate-motivated acts”

People were shocked the school is taking such drastic measures to protect the students:

Other students are not only triggered by Shapiro's arrival to campus, but they are planning on protesting the event. Campus Reform reports flyers have been distributed across UC Berkeley calling a tool for “intellectual thuggery”: “No Ben Shapiro: The Problem is NOT ‘Campus Thuggery’ The Problem is Fascist Intellectual Thuggery in the service of the Trump/Pence Fascist Regime.”

The flyer informs people a counter rally will be happening at the same time and encourages others to “speak out against white supremacy, misogyny, xenophobia, and fascism.”
