A fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers was so disappointed with his team's refusal to be out on the field for the national anthem during Sunday's game that he burned his team's gear.

Jim Heaney, a veteran of the Marine Corps who served in the Gulf War, said he was a lifelong Steelers fan up until Sunday.

“Some of these things my children gave me as birthday presents and Christmas gifts,” he said of the objects he burned. “And that really hurts. But I'm not watching you anymore.”

“It's a sad day all this stuff has to go,” he said. “My father was born in Pittsburgh. He brought me to my first game.”

Heaney did praise the sole Steeler to go out onto the field for the anthem: Alejandro Villanueva, an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan. Villanueva's jersey sales have seen a sharp rise since then.

“I hope all your ignorance burns, too,” he told the team.
