Sparks were flying Wednesday night as ideologically polar opposite Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) went to war on tax policy.

The battle happened on CNN in a debate format that featured regular Americans asking the two senators probing questions on the policies that affect all Americans' pocketbooks.

In one particularly fiery exchange, Cruz confronted Sanders on the European socialist policies he had been defending throughout the evening. Sanders, who is a self-described democratic socialist, was asked by Cruz, “Let me just ask, since this is a tax debate, what is the difference between a socialist and a Democrat on taxes?”

Sanders paused for a moment and looked curiously into the camera.

Sanders eventually said, “Well, I don't know the answer to that because…”

Cruz interrupted, saying, “I don't know, either.”

Sanders went on to tout the socialist democracies of Europe, saying they have “a much higher standard of living” than America, adding that “those on top should be asked to pay their fair share.”
