Before President Donald Trump ripped apart NFL players who protested the national anthem and more players protested than ever before, Hillary Clinton and Trump supporters had very similar opinions of the NFL. But now, Morning Consult has conducted a study showing what has happened since, and it's shocking.
Around 60 percent of Republicans viewed the NFL favorably, while 20 percent viewed it unfavorably before Trump's comments and the mass protests. But after, Trump supporters have completely changed their minds on their opinions of the NFL. In almost a complete reversal, 60 percent of Trump supporters now view the NFL unfavorably and only 30 percent favorably:
Clinton supporters' positions haven't changed hardly at all:
This dramatic change is likely due to the sheer amount of protests that took place after Trump's comments and also because of the news coverage of the protests. After the national anthem protests, both Clinton and Trump supporters said the majority of news they saw about the NFL was negative.
In fact, in July, only 10 percent of Trump and Clinton supporters saw mostly negative news about the NFL, but this jumped all the way up to almost 50 percent for Clinton supporters and a whopping 80 percent for Trump supporters:
While both Republicans and Democrats are more likely to view the NFL as unfavorable after the president speaks out against it, it's shocking just how dramatic the change was. In fact, the NFL is now the seventh-most divisive brand in the nation, behind only Trump Hotels, CNN, NBC News, The New York Times, MSNBC, and Fox News.
Despite this poll clearly showing how America has responded to the national anthem protests, the NFL does not have any plans to implement a new policy to put an end to it.
