President Donald Trump had just issued a joint statement with Chinese President Xi Jinping when Jinping pulled Trump aside to ask him a sensitive question about U.S. politics.
He grabbed his interpreter so he could probe the U.s. president for an answer.
“Who is Roy Moore?” Jinping reportedly asked Trump.
The discussion was relayed to The Associated Press by two White House officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to speak on the issue.
The officials apparently did not reveal how Trump responded.
Moore, a Republican Senate candidate in Alabama, has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct. One accuser, Beverly Young Nelson, claims Moore attacked her when she was only a teenager and attempted to force her head into his crotch.
Since the disturbing allegations have surfaced, several high-profile Republicans have withdrawn their support for the candidate, including Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
