President Donald Trump showed empathy for former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn Monday while taking a shot at Hillary Clinton.

“I feel badly for Gen. Flynn,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI, nothing happened to her. Flynn lied and they destroyed his life. I think it's a shame.”

“I think it's very unfair,” the president continued. His statements this morning mimic his tweet on Saturday:

When Clinton was under investigation for using a private email server as secretary of state, she was interviewed for more than three hours at FBI headquarters over July 4th weekend in 2016. Former FBI Director James Comey said that Clinton did not lie during the interview. Because Clinton was not in custody, her interview was not recorded, according to Fox News.

Flynn was forced to resign after giving misleading information to Vice President Mike Pence during his December 2016 conversation regarding sanctions with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. The conversation took place during Trump's transition period, making a conversation with the incoming national security advisor and a foreign diplomat somewhat routine.

Trump tweeted Flynn's situation is a "is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!”

It's still unclear why Flynn lied.
