An Alabama church has been flooded with calls after a picture surfaced online of a message about Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Roy Moore appearing on the church's sign.
It read: “They falsely accused Jesus. Vote Roy Moore.”
WHNT in Huntsville, Alabama, said they called The Living Way Ministries in Opelika on Monday to confirm. Someone from the church informed them that more than one person has keys to the sign, and one of them posted the message.
Two days later, the person said, the church's pastor requested the message be taken down.
Now some are asking whether the church can still legally claim tax exemptions as a 501(c)(3) organization. According to the IRS's website, such organizations cannot “participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.”
Moore has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct yet has denied all charges and committed to staying in the race. He faces off against Democrat Doug Jones on December 12.
