While the bro-centric Left continues to dream of a Bernie Sanders presidential candidacy in 2020, Democrats are eyeing a diverse slate of rising stars who appeal to the 3 million more voters who voted for Hillary Clinton.
One of those rising stars is Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), who is as close to an anti-Trump as you can get. Democrats have rallied around the first-term Senator due to her toughness and penchant for sending Republicans into a knee-jerk white male panic.
Those rooting for a Kamala Harris 2020 presidential run, despite her boilerplate coyness on the subject, got some good news this weekend. Page Six is reporting that Harris is rubbing elbows with a roster of heavy-hitting Hillary Clinton donors:
The California senator is being fêted in Bridgehampton on Saturday at the home of MWWPR guru Michael Kempner, a staunch Clinton supporter who was one of her national-finance co-chairs and a led fund-raiser for her 2008 bid for the presidency. He was also listed as one of the top “bundlers” for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, having raised $3 million.
Guests there to greet Harris are expected to include Margo Alexander, a member of Clinton’s inner circle; Dennis Mehiel, a Democratic donor who is the chairman of the Battery Park City Authority, even though he lives between a sprawling Westchester estate and an Upper East Side pad; designer Steven Gambrel and Democratic National Committee member Robert Zimmerman.
Washington lobbyist Liz Robbins is also hosting a separate Hamptons lunch for Harris.
This news will likely propel a backlash from the anti-Hillary wing of the left, but those who don't believe in unilateral fundraising disarmament will be encouraged by such a pragmatic and substantive step. It's an action that speaks louder than words like “I'm focused” on other things.
While it's still early. Harris's testing of the waters looks pretty serious, and is a welcome sign for members of the Democratic base who fear their party will abandon its diverse base in an effort to chase white voters whom they will never get. A Harris candidacy would serve to turn out more of that base, rather than alienate it with naked appeals to Trump voters.
