One of the more annoying low expectations narratives to develop recently has been the notion that new Trump Chief of Staff John Kelly has ushered in the era of the new, well-behaved President Donald Trump, the main evidence of this being the downgrade of Trump's Twitter feed from a Category 5 sh*t show to a mere topical depression.
That narrative came to an abrupt end Tuesday morning, in comical yet frightening fashion.
NBC News reporter Katy Tur appeared on “Morning Joe” to promote her new book about being Trump's favorite lady punching bag on the campaign trail, and in the comically ironic department, conceded that Trump's Twitter behavior has been more moderate since Kelly's tenure began, but predicted an impending return to terrible form:
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: You don't see in the past two weeks, a different trump?
TUR: Maybe if that continues, but I think there's been a lot of disasters that have captivated the attention to the American public. He hasn't had room to revert back to how he normally behaves. I don't think there's enough evidence to say that this is Donald Trump.
BRZEZINSKI: I don't disagree.
TUR: I'm not saying that can't happen. I'm saying whatever we've spoken about the changes in tone that he might have had, he's always gone back.
As if summoned by the mere mention of his name, like some kind of Trumpelstiltskin, Trump was yanked off the John Kelly Twitter wagon:
This would have been purely amusing when Trump was just a blowhard TV star, but it is genuinely disconcerting that he can be forced into abandoning the most minimal display of self-control, one which has garnered him heaps of unearned praise, by his membrane-thin ego.
