Trump: ‘In America, We Don’t Worship Government. We Worship God.’

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school in Virginia, Donald Trump remarked about America’s founding principles and Christian origin to a receptive student audience.

In a line that received thunderous applause, Trump declared:

“America has always been the land of dreams because America is a nation of true believers. When the pilgrims landed at Plymouth, they prayed. When the Founders wrote the declaration of Independence, they invoked our Creator for four times. In America we don’t worship government, we worship God.”

Trump went on to highlight areas where God comes into play in the federal government:

“That is why our elected officials put their hands on the Bible and say ‘So help me God’ as they take the oath of office. It is why our currency proudly declares in God we trust. It is why we proudly proclaim that we are one nation under God. Every time we say the Pledge of Allegiance.”

The president of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr., was an avid Trump supporter and worked in evangelical outreach for Trump during the campaign.

This was Trump’s second visit to the school and his first as president.
