Trump’s Getting Fierce Backlash for ‘Insulting’ Vets with PTSD. Here’s What He Actually Said…

On Monday, Donald Trump made comments about the mental health of veterans that are sparking controversy.

At a town hall event for the Retired American Warriors PAC in Virginia, Trump was asked:

“As you mentioned there’s a tragic suicide epidemic among veterans. While the military and VA are working on the problem, their efforts continue to fall short. There are a number of faith based programs outside the DOD and the VA that are continuing to be successful in stopping suicide and divorce rates.

Spiritual fitness works in these types of problems. The government is not taking advantage of these programs and services. So my question to you is when you become president will you support and fund a moral holistic approach to solve the problems and issues of veteran suicide, PTSD, TBI and other related military mental and behavioral health issues.

And, will you take steps to restore the historic role of our chaplains and the importance of spiritual fitness and spiritual resiliency problems?”

He responded:

“Yes I would. We need that so badly. And when you talk about the mental health problems when people come back from war and combat and they see things that maybe a lot of folks in this room have seen many times over.

And they’re strong and they can handle it, but a lot of people can’t handle it. And they see horror stories, they see events that you couldn’t see in a movie, nobody could believe it.

We need mental health and medical, and it’s one of the things that is least addressed and one of the things — one of the things that I hear most about when I go around and talk to the veterans. So we are going to have a very robust, very, very robust level of performance having to do with mental health.”

Trump’s being grilled for his take on the issue:

However, some are pointing out that Trump’s words have been taken out of context or that he just chose poor wording, but was being sympathetic:

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton hasn’t commented on her opponent’s remarks, but she did retweet BuzzFeed’s critical story on the issue.
