We Asked Gary Johnson to Roll a Joint and His Response Was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gary Johnson is the Libertarian candidate for President. He uses marijuana and thinks you should be able to also. According to his website, Johnson believes weed should be legalized on a state-by-state basis.

The Federal government should not stand in the way of states that choose to legalize marijuana. Governors Johnson and Weld would remove cannabis from Schedule I of the federal Controlled Substances Act, which will allow individual states to make their own decisions about both recreational and medical marijuana.

The former Governor of New Mexico has been very up front about his prior and current use of marijuana. In an interview with Independent Journal Review, Johnson stated that he smokes “one and a half times a week,” but then admitted “in my heyday in college, I actually quantified it as two and a half times a week.”

Johnson has suspended his use of marijuana since announcing his presidential run.

Johnson got emotional when asked about the criminalization of the substance that millions of Americans use.

Look, I think I’m one of 100 million-plus Americans… until people start stepping up and saying, ‘Look, I’m not a criminal…I’m just a regular human being that if I choose to take the edge off of the day by consuming marijuana, who’s to begrudge me that?’

In the last 12 months, the number one category of arrest in this country is still marijuana. Still! That’s just flabbergasting. What I’ve always said is we all have friends, family, co-workers that use marijuana. And you may disagree with their use of marijuana, but none of them are criminal. And yet, it still is a criminal penalty.

Johnson’s decriminalization opinions are shared by an all-time high number of Americans, according to recent polling, and those views stand to sweep ballot legalization initiatives on Election Day.

For the informational part of our interview, we presented the governor with these two items:

We asked if Johnson could further de-stigmatize the use of marijuana by showing IJR viewers how to roll a blunt.

While Johnson originally looked quite eager to comply — saying, “Well, it’s been a long time…” — his staff informed us that this was not going to happen, saying “nope” many times off camera and eventually pulling the interview.

Johnson shrugged and told us that marijuana edibles were more his thing: “My consumption of the last couple of years has been edibles.”

According to Real Clear Politics, Johnson is polling in the 5% range nationwide.
