The Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP bestowed its Person of the Year Award on Al Sharpton Thursday, following its withdrawal of the Lifetime Achievement Award it had planned to give to Donald Sterling last month.

For his part, Sharpton couldn't resist taking a shot at the embattled Sterling during his acceptance speech:

"Sterling may be rich but he’s not as rich as the history of this organization,” Sharpton told guests at the gala dinner.

The chapter came under fire when it was learned that it had presented Sterling with the award in 2009, and was planning to do so again this month. Critics claimed Sterling had donated a substantial amount of money to the chapter in the last few years. The chapter's president subsequently resigned.

Ironically, Sharpton is no stranger to controversy himself when it comes to making racially-charged comments:

While there is no place for Donald Sterling's bigotry in America, why is it that time after time, a double standard is applied to Al Sharpton?
