“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd and his guests went after the “Obama political machine” Sunday over the losses Democrats have suffered at the polls during the Obama administration.
Todd began but putting Democratic Congressional losses into perspective:
"[J]ust how badly have Democrats been performing? Since 2009, Democrats have lost a net of 13 Senate seats and a whopping 69 House seats. Now let's put this in some historical context:
You have to go all the way back to Eisenhower to match this many losses for a party that controls the White House with Senate seats, 13 of them. And in the House, it's been 100 years since a two-term president's party suffered worse losses."
Politico reporter Marc Caputo was blunt about the cause:
“The Barack Obama political machine and oh, we’re big data? It’s a lie. The Obama political machine without Obama is no machine. They don’t win. That was a largely personality-based campaign in two different cycles.”
Even MSNBC's Rachel Maddow agreed:
“What’s happening is the Democratic Party is getting smoked strategically by the Republican Party.”
Caputo also pointed to Democrats running away from Obama during the 2014 midterm elections:
“You also had, in addition to that, folks not liking Barack Obama very much, so if you were running for office, you ran away from Obama and Obama’s people didn’t run toward you to help."
Following the 2010 midterms, Obama admitted that the Democrats had received a “shellacking.”
