Followers of Sweden's official Twitter account (@sweden) were in for quite a surprise last week when the “curator” chosen to run the account unexpectedly launched into a tirade against immigrants and “white people.”
For those of you unfamiliar with the account, each week the government-run Swedish Institute chooses a new “curator of Sweden” to tweet “about life in Sweden, love or work, sharing opinions and ideas along the way.”
Last week, the account was run by a man who identified as Elias.
He first made waves by discussing his opinions on the nation's open-borders approach to immigration:
...Only to come back two days later with a rant about his immigrant status:
Elias even threw in some shade toward those promoting white privilege in his adopted country:
Several of the account's 90,000 followers appeared to loved Elias' fresh approach, even going so far as to tweet in their thanks for his candor.
This isn't the first time that the @Sweden account has faced controversy - Adland.tv reports that other curators have tweeted lewd and/or politically-charged statements before.
Nonetheless, the government has taken strides to separate itself from the posts created on the account, issuing the following disclaimer:
“SI does not endorse any Curator Submission or any opinion, recommendation, or advice expressed therein, and SI expressly disclaims any and all liability in connection with curator submissions.”
