After weeks of speculation, National Review writer David French was revealed on Tuesday as the man #NeverTrump supporters, including Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, hope will be their savior in this year's presidential election.
So, who exactly is David French?
1. David French bravely served our country during Operation Iraqi Freedom
A major in the United States Army Reserve, French was deployed to Iraq in 2007, where he served as a Squadron Judge Advocate for the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He was later awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, French acknowledged he was inspired to join the Army after learning of a wounded soldier that was the same age as him.
He told the site:
“How was this man any different than me? Why was it right for him to sacrifice and not me?”
2. David French is a Constitutional lawyer
A graduate of Harvard Law School, French has built his career around the study of constitutional law.
He previously served as president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, where he authored the foundation's Guide to Religious Liberty on Campus and co-authored its Guide to Free Speech on Campus.
3. David French is a published author
In addition to being a staff writer for National Review, French has authored or co-authored several best-selling books over the years on everything from family life to ISIS and free speech on college campuses.
4. David French is a political neophyte
Should French run, he would be a first-time candidate — much like the man his campaign is targeted against, real estate developer Donald Trump.
His wife Nancy talked with NBC News on Wednesday about his political work:
“He's been trying to get other people to run for a long time, so that's probably why people are considering him, you know, because he's been very adamantly anti-Trump, or at least Never Trump, Never Hillary.”
French has also been one of the leaders of the anti-Trump movement, penning a column in National Review just last week that called for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to run as an independent:
5. David French is a Beltway outsider
Although French has long worked with D.C. insiders, he is not technically one of them.
Instead, David and his wife Nancy live 700 miles away from the grind of the nation's capital, in Columbia, Tennessee, a small town about an hour's drive south of Nashville.
They live there with their three children, including an adopted daughter from Ethiopia.
6. David French's wife is a ghostwriter for the Palins
David isn't the only one in the family making a name for themselves in the conservative movement.
His wife Nancy is a four-time New York Times best-selling author and ghostwriter, having collaborated on the biographies of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and her daughter Bristol, among others.
French has yet to confirm or deny a potential presidential bid, instead tweeting the following on Tuesday:
With the election just five months away, however, he'll most definitely have his work cut out for him, should he decide to run.
