The DNC email hacks landed like a bomb last week when they were released by Wikileaks, and now the FBI has taken notice.

The leaks, which have produced thousands of formerly-private emails from Democratic National Committee staff, exposed an organized effort on behalf of Hillary Clinton.

So on Sunday, Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation, and she'll be working directly for the Clinton campaign now. (But not before she was booed off the stage on Monday).

Now there's an additional concern, as highlighted by the Clinton campaign and security experts:

This is further evidence the Russian government is trying to influence the outcome of the election.

Such a hack would attempt to stir division in the election by angering Bernie supporters and weakening the DNC. To this point, however, Democrats have failed to release a smoking gun on the subject.

Former Trump adviser Michael Caputo has also called out Russia for potential involvement:

As has Gen. Michael Flynn, who spoke on stage at the Republican National Convention. He told Eli Lake of Bloomberg View:

“Both China and Russia have the full capability to do this,“ he said. ”If someone were to find out Russia did this I would not be surprised at all."

Now the FBI has arrived, and it released a statement on the subject Monday, as first reported by the Associated Press:

“The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the DNC and are working to determine the nature and scope of the matter. A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.”

CNN adds more:

The FBI has sent experts to meet with the Republican National Committee, as well as the major campaigns, to discuss their security measures, the officials say. No similar intrusions have so far been detected at the RNC or the campaigns of the two major party candidates, the officials say.
