Explosion Rocks New York City: Multiple People Injured as IED Device Detonates in Downtown Manhattan

A bomb explosion in Manhattan at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night has left at least 26 people injured. The New York Police Department's Counterterrorism unit is investigating for potential ties to terrorism groups.

Initially, at least 14 people were reported injured. That number swelled to 26 victims.

The bombing follows a similar pipe bomb explosion coming from an IED placed in a trashcan at a Marine charity race earlier today on the Jersey Shore, via News 12:

The beach and boardwalk in Seaside Park have been evacuated due to a pipe bomb explosion in a trash can, which came moments before a major charity race was set to begin.Official sources tell News 12 New Jersey that two unexploded pipe bombs have also been found.

The NYPD Counterterrorism unit is investigating both incidents for signs of terrorism.

The blast was strong enough to blow out the windows on some vehicles, and injured an eight-year-old boy in the process:

A witness at the Chelsea bombing told Fox News that it was like, “fireworks but a 1000 times stronger...like if we were in Iraq and there was an explosion.”

There were at least two pipebombs, also placed in trash cans, found by police investigators at Seaside Park, New Jersey earlier on Saturday. No terrorist groups have taken credit for the explosion in Manhattan or the Marine charity race in New Jersey.
