After the late Grand Ole Opry star Jean Shepard passed away at the age of 82 in September, her family is facing another tragic loss.
Early in the morning on December 17th, reports WKRN, the late singer's husband, Benny Birchfield, ran out of his house in Hendersonville, Tennessee, after being stabbed.
Birchfield wasn't the only victim of the stabbing. His 18-year-old granddaughter, Icie Hawkins, was also stabbed by a man named Travis Sanders.
Sanders, a 21-year-old acquaintance of Hawkins, was found inside the house, dead from a .38 caliber gunshot wound.
Neighbor Michael Gay describes waking up to the police lights surrounding the Birchfield's home to WKRN:
“I just kind of woke up to all the lights. My neighbor said there was some arguing... I knew there were problems here and there, which everyone has, but I didn't expect this to happen.”
Sgt. Jim Vaughn of the Hendersonville Police Department explains to The Tennessean that the crime was an isolated incident saying, “The situation was contained at the house, everybody who was there was identified.”
Birchfield survived the attack and after surgery, his condition is improving. Sadly, his granddaughter died on the way to the hospital.
