Singer George Michael has died at age 53.
According to The Guardian, Michael's publicist confirmed the singer's passing in a statement, saying:
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.”
BBC News reports that an ambulance was called to his property in the early afternoon of December 25, 2016. Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
The British pop star, born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, rose to fame as a member of the group Wham! in the 1980s. Following his success with Wham!, he went on to have a booming solo career.
In his statement, Michael's publicist asks for privacy for the family during this time:
“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
As The Guardian reports, Michael was planning to release a documentary in 2017.
