The Golden Globe Awards brought some cheers and some jeers as it normally does, and this time around, the main focus of the show seemed to be politics.
One award-winning actress decided to emphasize recent political events during her acceptance speech, causing complaints and celebrations. As she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Meryl Streep used her time on stage to go after President-elect Donald Trump, saying:
“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good, there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Some celebrities stepped up to praise Streep following her speech:
Travis Tritt, however, was not one of them.
The country singer made his feelings about mixing celebrities with politics crystal clear. Shortly after Meryl Streep's acceptance speech, Tritt tweeted:
Tritt had fans go both ways in their responses to his tweet.
Some had no problem with Streep speaking her mind during the show:
Others agreed with Tritt:
The country star even got a lecture of his own:
But Tritt didn't stop there. In a follow-up tweet, again without mentioning Streep by name, Tritt offered the actress some advice:
“If you have fans who respect your talent enough to spend hard earned money to see your talent, be thankful and gracious and leave it at that”
There you have it.
